Baillie Birdathon
Thanks so much to all of the people who supported Ruthven's Baillie Birdathon team and contributed to Ruthven's migration monitoring program.
In the end we raised $2410!
Information
Migration Monitoring for Spring 2012 is now underway. A bander will be on-site daily from dawn until approximately noon throughout the spring (weather permitting). Visitors are quite welcome. If you are interested in volunteering at Ruthven now or in the future, please email Rick Ludkin at rludkin 'at' hotmail.com.
Ruthven Park is a great place for birding, even when banding is not taking place. If you take any interesting pictures while there, or make any interesting observations, please email them to Rick Ludkin (see address above), and we can put them on the blog.
For directions to Ruthven, see the main Ruthven Park website.

May 5th – NE Wind Slows Things Down
A cool NE wind blew throughout the night and I could see as we were opening the nets that it was going to have an impact on the day’s events. In fact, it probably had well before we got to … Continue reading
May 4th – May The Fourth Be With You…..
And so it was, as we had our biggest banding day of the Spring so far. There had been some rain, heavy at times, during the night and when I arrived (Loretta had beat me to it), it was still … Continue reading
May 3rd – Another Good Day

May 2nd – The Parade Continues
For the third day in a row, Yellow-rumped Warblers poured through the site. We banded 36 today bringing our 3-day total up to 106 and 136 for the year. This is more than double the previous high total of 60 … Continue reading
May 1st – Snow Bunting Round-up & The Flow Continues
First, in Snow Bunting news: Pictured above is the #1 Team in Canada this year for banding Snow Buntings: SNBU Quebec Cote-Nord. Despite the lousy Winter they have managed to band 2,089 up to and including April 30th (and may … Continue reading
April 30th – The Dam Bursts….Finally
The day started off not unlike any other we’ve had for the past week: cold with frost in the low spots and coating some of the nets and poles. My initial thought was: “Oh no, another quiet, birdless day”. Although … Continue reading
April 29th – YWAR’s Are Back…..At Last
For work in the field (and then for ease of data entry), The American Ornithological Union (A.O.U.) came up with a series of 4-letter short-forms or “alpha codes” for recording birds rather than revert to the long form or having … Continue reading
April 28th – Another Slow Day
It’s a good thing it was Clean-up Day at Ruthven – it gave us something to do. For the past several days high-level winds out of the north have flooded us with cold temperatures and adverse flying conditions resulting in … Continue reading
April 27th – Still Waiting
There’s not really much to write about – we’re still in a holding pattern with cold northerly winds holding up the influx of long-distance migrants that we’ve been expecting. Interestingly, while we had very early arrivals of many short-distance migrants … Continue reading
April 26th – Anticipation
For quite a while now I’ve been looking forward with anticipation. It can’t happen soon enough for me but it seems to be taking forever. I know it’s just around the corner and I won’t be waitng in vain but… … Continue reading
